In 2020, while directing legendary tech founder Steve Wozniak over a headset in a busy TV control room at CBS Television Center in Los Angeles, I had a moment of pride. Steve had just listened to a founder pitch, and the founder nailed it—a direct result of the collaborative work we had done in the weeks leading up to that moment and the investor pitch strategies I had shared.
During my time with Unicorn Hunters, leading a team of curious, professional storytellers, I interacted with countless founders. Some were ready for prime time; many were not. Yet, even those who weren’t selected left with a newfound clarity about emotional intelligence in business, their story and how to present it.
In this often pressure filled environment I recognized a skill I’d taken for granted: the ability to analyze dense, technical pitches and transform them into emotionally intelligent, consumable narratives. By helping founders clarify their message and lead with stories, we turned ‘zeros into heroes’ in front of an esteemed panel featuring Steve Wozniak, Rosie Rios, and other expert investors.
Watching those “Eureka moments”—when executives realized they could abandon rigid formulas and embrace authentic storytelling—was transformative for me. It ignited my passion for this unique process and showed me the value of combining my background in storytelling with my business acumen. I remembered the pleasure I had working with proven CEOs and growing businesses when I produced The Mentor for Bloomberg TV back in 2013. That realization closed the loop and was the catalyst for MessageHQ.
